Stazione dell’Arte: the contemporary art museum dedicated to Maria Lai

The Stazione dell’Arte – Maria Lai Contemporary Art Museum of Ulassai (about 20 km from the Cala Luas Resort), is one of the Ogliastra’s main attractions. In 2006, the old train station was converted into the “Stazione dell’Arte” (art station): a modern, contemporary art museum that gathers and exhibits the most important artworks by Maria Lai.

Maria Lai (1919-2013) is among the most important and fascinating feminine figures of Italy’s art history in the second half of the 1900’s. To mark the first anniversary of the artist’s death, an exhibition was created, and it is still open. It is dedicated to her work and it was divided between three museums: in Cagliari, Nuoro and Ulassai.

The rooms of the Stazione dell’Arte museum are currently set up according to the original project, created by the artist herself, with a space dedicated to geographical maps and another space to the installation.

Among the guests of this room, Salvatore Cambosu, Giuseppe Dessì and Arturo Martini.

The town of Ulassai has been often celebrated by the artist, and it appears in some of her works, such as: “La strada delle capre cucite” (the road of the sewn goats), “Il gioco del volo dell’oca” (the game of the flight of the goose), “il Telaio soffitto del lavatoio” (the loom) and many more.
